Polyurethane Air Tubing
Polyurethane Air Tubing
At SMC Pneumatics, we have different sizes of polyurethane air tubing for your machine. Choose from eight different colors and ensure that you are always equipped to make the necessary connections within your machine. The sizing is quite flexible and ranges from ? of an inch to 5/16 of an inch, for the smallest arrangements. You can get exactly the model you need for your machine, as well as the right amount of tubing.
Applicable for compressed air, and general industry water. Surge pressure must be under the max. operating pressure. If exceeding that value, fitting may be damaged and tubing may burst. The values of the max. operation pressure are at a temperature of 20°C. Refer to the burst pressure characteristics curve for other temperatures. Avoid abnormal temperature rise which may burst the tubing. The values of the min. bending Radius are at a temperature of 20°C. Higher temperature allows the tubing to bend more. |

Pneumatic Tubes Versus Hoses
Pneumatic tubes and hoses are used to ensure consistent airflow within a pneumatic machine. They arrive in all shapes and sizes, to suit the designated device. While you can get either rigid or flexible options, operators and engineers prefer having more leeway with the latter. Hence, at SMC we have pneumatic tubing and hoses.
A pneumatic hose is usually reinforced tubing that has an additional nylon layer. You specify its measurements by inside diameter due to the additional nylon braid, since it naturally reduces the diameter. Generally, machines that use hoses prefer reinforcement over the loss of potential flexibility.
While it is more durable, the benefits of tubing are that you can use them in tighter situations and more flexibility. You specify tubing measurements by outside diameter. There is also a lesser chance of fraying when you need to make cuts due to the lack of a nylon braid.
Since pneumatic machines run on air pressure, you want to ensure that the cylinders, valves, and compressors are aptly connected. You want to ensure there are minimal opportunities for leaks and that airflow can remain consistent. If the air becomes blocked or finds an opening, then the pressure cannot help the machine function.
Kink resistance is one important factor. “Kinks” refer to a sharp twist or turn in a hose or tubing that ends up blocking the transport of the air within it. Consider how if you twist a regular garden hose that the water stops flowing and pressure builds until you release it. Kinks in pneumatic hoses work the same way, only you would encounter blocks in airflow rather than in water.
The concerns then become air pressure building up unnecessarily and the machine not receiving the power that it needs. You want to ensure that the air is transported consistently and maintains the pressure needed for reliable functioning.
Benefits Of Polyurethane
Polyurethane is very flexible and adjustable to different spaces. It’s also quite durable which means that you have to replace the tubing far less often. We will go more into the circumstances necessitating replacement below. The lack of kinks means also that you can bend it in any direction and not cause any blockage, which is highly useful for compressed and tight spots within a machine.
You also will get a consistent shape from this pneumatic tube. The polyurethane will return to its original shape after bending and unbending. This makes it highly reusable and versatile so that you can implement it for multiple purposes and functions. You can get a lot of mileage out of polyurethane.
We recommend using this type of tubing for portable devices and for machines with ample coiling. The lightweight qualities and flexibility mean that it can adapt to various situations with pneumatic hoses and to smaller operations. Medical pneumatic devices tend to use polyurethane to power their devices and create a constant stream of airflow.
Connecting Your Pneumatic Chambers
This tubing is applicable for compressed air, and general industry water. Surge pressure must be under the maximum operating pressure. If exceeding that value, fitting may be damaged and tubing may burst. You would rather avoid that because a burst tubing will necessitate replacement.
The values of the maximum operation pressure are at a temperature of 20°C, or 68°F. Keep an eye on your rising heat, as a result. Refer to the burst pressure characteristics curve for other temperatures.
Avoid abnormal temperature rise which may burst the tubing. The values of the minimum bending Radius is at a temperature of 20°C or 68°F. The higher temperature allows the tubing to bend more. That way in the case if a machine that requires a large number of coils would for convenience, you can do a quick replacement and not worry about straining the tubing.
