FMVSS (DOT) & SAE Compliant
KV2 fittings are used for commercial trucks, transit, trailer, and specialty vehicle markets. They work very well to connect your air brakes with the necessary tubing to help them function. One-touch technology makes tube insertion (with strong tube holding force) and removal easier. KV2’s patented seal allows tube cut angles to be well above the heavy vehicle industry standard. KV2 meets FMVSS 571.106, SAE J1131 and SAE J2494 standards.
- One-touch connection reduces installation time and cost
- Rugged ultraviolet and vibration resistant composite body
- Various shapes and configurations to met vehicle applications and make installation easier
What Is DOT Compliance?
DOT refers to the Department of Transportation, which is the bureaucratic body that mandates safety for those who use the road, water or skies to reach destinations. Government officials designate DOT compliance as abiding by the federal regulations that they set, which are meant to reduce potential risks.
While you can use management software to keep up to date about the changing standards, the computer programs cannot do the actual act of replacement. That is up to you, the vehicle owner, and the mechanics that you hire. Thus you need to know when you need to get your DOT compliant fittings. You also need to register with the department to get a USDOT number. Failure to comply can lead to fines or jail time in the worst case.
Which vehicles, in particular, have to implement DOT compliance? Commercial motor vehicles are the standard ones, but others include if you are transporting hazardous materials or a certain amount of people. You also need to meet DOT standards if your total vehicle weight is a minimum of 4,536 kg, which is 1,0001 pounds in customary.
If you transport more than eight people for compensation, say on a bus, then you need to comply. The same goes if you transport fifteen people without compensation. The government wants to ensure that regulations reduce any potential moral hazards.
Fleet managers have many duties to abide by DOT regulations. Keep track of your road incidents and a detailed paper trail. You always need to perform regular vehicle inspections to adhere to compliance and ensure that everyone’s driver qualifications are current. Drivers need to maintain their paperwork regarding hours of service and prepare for random drug tests.
Once you have your people in order, you need to make sure that your trucks, trailers and other motor vehicles are up to standards. That means ensuring that items like air brakes, their tubings and fittings are in order.
Dot Approved Air Brakes
Do you drive a commercial vehicle, such as a truck or a trailer? Then you must learn all about the rules that are involved. These include making sure that your transport is up-to-date with the right parts. Air brakes are especially important with how they allow you to make safe slow-downs and stops.
Browse our air brake tubing fittings to find the right one for your vehicle. If the brakes fail, then injuries to passengers and the driver an ensue, sometimes even resulting in a fatality. Trucks require a minimum of 60 air brake fittings to conform with regulations and allow for proper stops, and sometimes may even need 100.
Generally, air brakes need to have a high heat threshold to deal with engines that are high-powered. They also need tensile strength and vibration resistance. Corrosion resistance ensures that they can last for a long time with the demands of driving and the road, while serviceability optimizes their ability to function for that duration.
Brass is the standard metal that is used because you can use it to customize a fitting and it withstands extreme heat. Customization can especially help with larger trucks that have a more complex braking system. Some models mix the brass with a polymer to create a lower-costing fitting and a lighter one.
You can either get a regular fitting or a push-to-connect, the latter of which lowers the learning curve for assembly. Push-to-connect also saves time on installation, which is a priority for some drivers.
