Vacuum Pads
Automation is everything these days. If your company isn't automating a huge percentage of its workflows, then you're falling behind. This is especially true if you represent a smaller or medium-sized manufacturing concern who is struggling to compete with larger firms and overseas operations. Foreign companies are able to offer extremely low costs to their domestic vendors.
By ensuring that you're using the latest robotic equipment, you can get a leg up on the international marketplace. One of the best ways to do this ensures that your robotic assembly line arms are equipped with high-quality vacuum pads.
These are perfect for any pneumatic absorption transfer system. Vacuum pads work in much the same way as suction cups, which then help your robots pick up pieces.
If you've never witnessed this kind of gear at work, then you're in for a treat. These systems can be installed in such a way that they're more gentle than a pair of graspers. Alternatively, you could generate enough of a vacuum that your pads would outperform some smaller graspers and other technologies.
At SMC Pneumatics, we always make sure to keep enough parts in stock so companies that haven't ever used vacuum pads before can place larger bulk orders. If you're still not sure about what kind of equipment you need for the type of workshop you manage, then you'll find the following pointers quite helpful.
You'll first want to look into what kind of materials fit your needs the best.
Different Material Design Options
Engineers are constantly hard at work developing new solutions made from a variety of substances. Some chemical specialists have designed newer polymers that hold up better to abuse in workshops that have to handle abrasive or grainy substrates. Others have worked to reinforce traditional designs so you can be sure you're getting something that will consistently perform well.
Vendors currently offer various types of vacuum pads made from silicone and NBR. This latter compound is produced by a special injection molding technique that involves a polyurethane (PU) compound that's not too different from what you probably have on the outside of your air hoses.
In most cases, you can't go wrong no matter which type of pad you select. The next step, however, is to pick how large you'd prefer your vacuum pads to be.
Sizing Options Available to Vacuum Pad Users
Regardless of the type of equipment in question, each design is offered in a variety of pad sizes that follow some generalized standards. The most common are as follows:
- 2mm
- 4mm
- 6mm
- 8mm
- 10mm
- 13mm
- 16mm
- 20mm
- 25mm
- 32mm
- 40mm
- 50mm
That being said, you should be able to find some slightly more unusual options as well. You'll want to match the pad size to the size of the workpieces your robotic arms operate on. Don't pick a pad that's too much larger than the pieces themselves. If you have a very small object, then it could easily get lost on the fairly healthy face of a 32mm pad for instance.
You don't want to pick pads that are considerably smaller than the pieces you plan to work with either. A robotic arm equipped with a pad that's anemically sized will struggle to pick up objects that it shouldn't have any difficulty with.
In some cases, you'll want to consider multiple dimensions in order to have a somewhat oblong pad. This is particularly useful if you plan on picking up objects that aren't regularly shaped. For instance, you can get flat NBR vacuum pads in 2x4, 3½x7 and 4x10 sizes if your manufacturing operations called for them.
Naturally, you could also request custom designs if need be. Some people run very specific manufacturing operations that necessitate custom pad sizes. More than likely, you're already thinking that none of the options on the market fit your needs so you'll have to order something like this.
You might be surprised to learn that this isn't true in an overwhelming majority of cases.
Factory Direct Parts that Work
Likewise, we've had a large number of opportunities to check back with customers about the kinds of parts they use in their own manufacturing operations. In most of these cases, people were actually able to order factory direct stock components and never had an issue.
Technicians from all departments were usually asked for input beforehand, but the purchasing process wasn't too difficult even for those who were first-time buyers.
All it took was a few measurements of the workpieces and a quick glance at a specifications sheet. Vendors have actually provided individual technical specifications for each model vacuum pad they manufacture. Even if there is very little difference between each design, they still take the time to provide detailed sheets that can help those who haven't ever bought this kind of equipment before.
Some people have even stated that they were able to turn around their facilities as a result. Doing things the old fashioned way can put a ton of stress on your crews. Factories that are understaffed may be overextended as it is, which might help to explain how so many managers have said that moving toward robotic equipment has revitalized the way they do business.
You may want to start by making a list of all the workflows that are currently bottlenecking your place of business. Once you have these down, you'll know right away what sorts of tasks could be better accomplished by vacuum-based pneumatic manufacturing gear.
