Toggle Valves by SMC Pneumatics
Toggle valves are one of the most important components of any pneumatic system. SMC Pneumatics provides you with top quality toggle valves including…
- 3-Way toggle valves
- 4-way toggle valve
…and more, depending on your needs.
Let’s explore the details of this part, and what you need to know before making a purchasing decision about this piece of equipment.
What Are Toggle Valves?
Toggle valves are pieces of equipment that allow the user to control the flow of fluid via a directional toggle switch. They are typically used in conditions with moderate temperatures and pressure applications. When you have three or four-way toggle valves give you multiple options for flow rates. These pieces tend to come with a wide range of materials, sizes and connection types.

Toggle Flip Mechanical Poppet Valves From SMC Pneumatics
SMC Pneumatics provides you with the VM series of mechanical poppet valves. Thanks to their super compact size, these units don’t require very much mounting space. This makes it an excellent choice in systems with tight space constraints. The VM series has a wide variety of actuator styles and flow capacity of up to 1.0 Cv.
Notes:
- Actuator replacements for VM100-VM200, VM400, and VM800.
- Plungers, roller levers, toggle levers, rod levers,
- Push buttons and twist selectors
Mechanical Toggle Valve From SMC Pneumatics: Perfect For Large Flow Capacity Systems
Our VZM series is a 5-port mechanical valve with toggle capacity. This design is perfect for handling systems with a large flow capacity. (VZM400 Cv 0.55- VZM500 Cv 0.6). The VZM may be had in metal or rubber spool styles. It has a variety of actuator options and you have your choice of external pilot.
Some characteristics of this toggle valve:
- For inert gas and air fluids
- Operating pressure of .15 to 1.0MPa
- -5 to 60°C ambient and fluid temperature
- The effective area of Cv 0.55
- Port size: main valve Rc(PT) 1/8 pilot valve (EXH) M5x0.8
Mechanical Toggle Valves With Wide-Ranging Operating Pressure
SMC Pneumatics offers you this Series VFM is a five port, compact, mechanical toggle valve that may be obtained in…
- rubber: (VFM300)
- …or metal sealing styles. (VFM200)
This is the ideal valve if you need a unit with a big flow capacity and a high rate of cycling. The VFM delivers an internal or external pilot body option and a variety of actuator choices.
Notes:
- For inert gas and air fluids
- 15 to 150 PSIG operating range
- Weighs 10.3 oz
- Max frequency: mechanical operation style
Further notes: If you are getting your toggle valve for a scenario in which the exhaust of the noise could cause issues in the surrounding areas.
- We offer actuator replacement for all valve types.
- Button options include push-button (mushroom style) push button (extended) push button (flush to the unit) and a single unit fastening ring.
How A Toggle Valve Usually Operates: An Explanation From SMC Pneumatics
A standard 3-way toggle valve will usually have:
- A fluid supply
- An outlet
- And an exhaust port
When the toggle is flipped to the “on” position, air or the fluid in question, often inert gas, will flow from the inlet to the outlet port and the exhaust port is stopped by a blocking mechanism. Once you flip the toggle switch to the “off” position, the inlet closes and the outlet leading to the exhaust port expels the outlet to the external environment. When you need to open the second outlet while exhausting the first outlet, move the toggle to the opposite position. 4-way fully-ported valves may be organized in a dual pressure inlet set up to conserve air consumption.
BE INFORMED: More Valve Terminology From SMC Pneumatics
When you’re making your selection of valves, it is helpful to have a set of definitions on hand, even if it is just as a refresher.
2 way: A two-port valve that flips the flow on and off.
3 way: A three-port valve that allows for flow through the valve into the chamber, then out via the valve exhaust. The universal function may be used as a diverter valve as well.
5/2 way: Is a five port, two position valve that will direct a fluid or air through one end of a double acting device while letting the other end expel to an exterior or exhaust system.
D.I.P rating: This stands for Dust and Ignition Proof.
Flame proof: This one is mostly in the name, but for a valve with an electrical component, it is important. It’s a way of confirming that the valve is safe to use in an environment with explosive hazards.
N.B. Bar: indicates pressure: 1 Bar = 14.7psi = 1000KPA = atmosphere.
When Do You Need To Use A Toggle Valve?
Toggle valves are for pneumatic systems in which manual control and decision making must be maintained. You will see these switches mounted into panels or free floating to allow for user control. One use case for toggle valves is pneumatic medical equipment.
